A 10x20 self-storage unit will hold most cars. The better question is whether it should. A unit built for boxes can park a vehicle, but it is not set up to care for one, and that difference adds up over a winter.
The size question
A 10x20 unit is roughly 200 square feet, about ten feet wide and twenty deep. Most sedans, coupes and small SUVs fit with enough room to open a door and walk around. A full-size truck or a long SUV gets tight, and if you want space to work around the car you are looking at a 10x25 or larger. So yes, on size alone, a storage unit holds a car.
Where self-storage units fall short for cars
- No vehicle care. A self-storage unit is four walls and a door. No one charges the battery, checks the tires or looks the car over. You come back to whatever months of sitting left behind.
- Access is awkward. Many indoor units sit down a hallway or up an elevator, not at a drive-in door, so parking a car in one is not even possible. The ones you can drive into are limited.
- Engine rules. Most self-storage sites do not allow you to run an engine indoors and restrict fuel in a unit, which makes moving the car in and out a chore.
- Not built for the car's condition. Climate varies unit to unit. Concrete and swings in temperature are not kind to a car resting for months.
What dedicated indoor vehicle storage does differently
A space built for vehicles starts from the car's needs instead of a box of furniture. Ours is indoor and climate controlled, sized for cars, and comes with the care a parked car actually needs. Every indoor-stored vehicle gets full video intake and outtake with mileage and fuel documented, a battery tender all season, tire pressure and voltage checks, and a wellbeing check every week. You are not renting empty space and hoping. You are leaving the car with people who watch it.
When a self-storage unit is fine
If you need to park a car for a few weeks, have a drive-in unit and do not mind handling the battery and tires yourself, a self-storage unit can do the job for a short stretch. The math changes once you are talking about a full winter or a car you care about. At that point the small monthly savings is not worth the spring repair list.
